Heather Langenkemp played the survivor girl role in the original Nightmare on Elm Street. Her ingenuity and creativity let her go toe to toe with Freddy Krueger, both in the dream world and in the waking world.
The series left her behind for the sequel, but she came back in Dream Warriors. The third installment of the franchise is seen by many as one of the best. Nancy was no longer the survivor girl from the first film. She was a bad ass hardened fighter not only ready to throw down with Freddy again, but looking to train an army to fight at her side. Ok, not an army so much as a squad. And the squad kinda turned into cannon fodder. But they were fighting Freddy, the odds were against them.
She came back one more time, but as Heather not Nancy, in Wes Craven’s New Nightmare. This was a very ingenious entry to the series that had been faltering. The movies had become more about Freddy wisecracking than any actual story or plotline. In New Nightmare, we learned that Freddy had somehow broken the barrier between the real world and the fictional silver screen world. So Heather is now having to fight against Freddy as herself, leaving the character of Nancy behind. But not really far behind because the Heather we see is almost identical to Nancy.
Nancy practically became an archetype of her own from these movies. I can’t help but think that Kirsty from Hellraiser was patterned slightly from her (Kirsty will be here tomorrow as she had 4 movies and it will be the 4th day. Seeing a method to my madness yet? )
What you probably don’t know about Heather though is that she has a special effects company with her husband. She has actually been a big part of the American Horror Story series as a S F/X artist and even had a small cameo role in Freak Show. She also did the F/X for the atrocious (in my view) series Scream Queens. It is interesting how the threads of her career are woven together (In New Nightmare, her husband was an F/X artist.)
She is on twitter although doesn’t have a lot of followers. Go forth and follow her, she deserves some love!
