Probably the most iconic twins ever to be seen in a horror movie, yet they had less than 2 minutes screen time in the movie. The Grady Twins. For day 2 of Women in Horror month, I wanted to take a minute to talk about these 2 iconic characters.
There is some discrepancy about the nature of the girls. While the actresses were twins, the characters were never meant to be twins. One 8 and the other 10. So calling them the Shining Twins is both accurate and inaccurate at the same time.
Their legacy has gone well beyond their film appearance. They have had cameo roles in shows like Family Guy, where Stewie dealt with them in his unique way. There have been video games where fans have paid homage to them, someone built a level for Duke Nukem based on the Overlook Hotel and naturally the Twins were there. There is even a group on myspace (yes, myspace still exists) called the Shining Twins, they are a folk sounding duo that really only have one song: Psycho. There are about 7 different tracks, but most are about a minute long and some won’t play.
The actresses who portrayed the Grady Twins are Lisa and Louise Burns. They continue to make their presence known in the horror world with convention appearances now and then. They also have social media accounts Twitter and Facebook. Ironically, The Shining was the last work they did as actresses. They tried to get into acting school to pursue further training in the field, but because of their work in The Shining, they were branded as professional actresses. And for them, as fledgling actresses, that closed more doors than it opened.
(I had wanted to expand this more than I did, but have been experiencing problems with the site, including not being able to upload pictures. Hopefully these will get figured out before tomorrows blog posting.)
